Welcome to Second Grade and a New School Year!

It was a pleasure to meet so many of you at Curriculum Night on Thursday.  I hope that you have a better understanding of some of our routines, schedules, activities, behavior and social practices, and content of the subjects taught to your children.
While it is obvious that we all want your children to succeed and thrive academically, it is just as important to me that every child find success in social relationships.  Please let me know what I can do to help make this a reality.
We have 2 new families I would like to welcome to our HES community this year:  Holden and the Ryan/Marsick family, and Ethan and the Hamel family.  Please make them feel welcome when you see or meet them.
Again, your boys and girls are just INCREDIBLE in all areas related to manners, positive attitudes, cooperation, desire to do well, listening, and being well-rounded class and HES citizens.
I firmly believe that 90% of this comes from what is taught at home by parents, siblings, and family members, so my hat goes off to all of you on that front.  THANK YOU!

To help get a conversation at home started with your child, here are 7 ??? you can ask him/her about the first two partial weeks of the new school year.   I hope the questions help to start some dialogue to that age-old question, "What did you do in school today?"

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

*  Tell me about your table group, table name, and some group games you have played.

*  What are some of the classroom jobs?  What does the "Person of the Week" get to do?  What does the hallway inspector do ?   How has your class done so far with hallway behavior and earning checks?

*  What special do you have on Wednesday mornings?  What time is your special?

*  When you have "Daily 5" during the reading block, what are some of the games you have played?  What is the game, Moose, and how do you play it?

*  During math, we explored different blocks and counting devices this week.  Tell me which one was your favorite, and what did you do with the pattern blocks, dominoes, base 10 blocks, and wooden geometric blocks?

*  Are there any new classmates you have gotten to know, or is there someone you are friendly with who you didn't really know last year?

* Is Massachusetts a continent?  What about the U.S.?  Still River?  Devens?  New York City?  How about Australia?  Can you name ALL 7 continents?  (clue:  remember the letter A and you'll be able to name most of them)
